Addis Ababa, April 1, 2026 (FMC) – Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos said Ethiopia’s longstanding friendship with the Russian Federation provides a solid foundation for collaboration on long-term strategic nuclear projects.
Minister Gedion made the remarks while receiving Nikolay Spassky, Deputy Director General of Russia’s Rosatom State Corporation, in a meeting focused on strengthening bilateral nuclear cooperation. He highlighted the progress achieved since the nuclear cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in September 2025.
During the meeting, Deputy Director General Spassky briefed the Minister on the recently adopted Strategic Roadmap for Nuclear Energy Development between Ethiopia and Russia. Sandokan Debebe, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission, said discussions concentrated on practical steps to implement the September agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The Strategic Roadmap, signed on 31 March 2026, outlines a joint framework and actionable plan guiding the future direction of nuclear energy cooperation between Ethiopia and the Russian Federation.
