Major Power Dialogue Yields New Understandings on China–U.S. Economic and Strategic Ties

Addis Ababa, May 15, 2026 (FMC) — Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump have reached new understandings on economic and strategic relations following a private meeting held on Friday at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in Beijing, according to Chinese state media.

The meeting took place as Trump concluded his state visit to China, a day after formal talks between the two leaders.

Upon Trump’s arrival, Xi welcomed him warmly, and the two leaders were seen walking and conversing within the compound’s garden.

Xi described the visit as historic and said both sides had agreed on a new vision for building a constructive China–U.S. relationship characterized by strategic stability. He stated that the two countries had reached important common understandings on maintaining stable economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation in various fields, and properly addressing each other’s concerns.

He further noted that both sides agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues. According to Xi, the engagement would help enhance mutual understanding, deepen mutual trust, and improve the well-being of the peoples of both countries.

Xi emphasized that it is a shared aspiration of the international community for China and the United States to pursue peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation based on mutual respect. He added that while the United States seeks national renewal, China is advancing national rejuvenation, stressing that both countries can support their respective development through cooperation.

He called for full implementation of the understandings reached, urging both sides to maintain momentum, stay aligned with the agreed direction, and avoid disruptions in bilateral relations.

For his part, Trump described the visit as highly successful, saying it had drawn global attention and produced meaningful outcomes. He said the two sides had reached a series of understandings, signed multiple agreements, and resolved several issues beneficial to both countries and the wider world.

Trump expressed respect for Xi, referring to him as an old friend, and said the China–U.S. relationship is highly important and expected to continue improving. He also indicated readiness to maintain close communication with Xi and expressed hope to host him in Washington in the future.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional hotspot issues, according to the report.
