Addis Ababa, December 4, 2025 (FMC) — Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced that the city administration is harnessing modern construction technologies to address the capital’s persistent housing shortages.
The Mayor made the remarks while inaugurating the first phase of construction for 26,000 condominium units at the Lafto site.
This large-scale project is being implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the City Administration and Legacy Home.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mayor Adanech stressed that the administration is committed to ensuring tangible benefits for the city’s residents.
She noted that various housing schemes have been designed and are being executed to tackle the shortage, which remains a pressing concern for the public.
Highlighting the innovative nature of the project, Mayor Adanech said it will introduce a construction technology that is unprecedented in both the city and the country.
The method employs galvanized steel components, enabling the rapid assembly of apartment buildings up to 12 stories high.
She further revealed that once the associated manufacturing plant reaches full capacity, it will be able to produce 26,000 housing units annually.
According to the Mayor, the new homes will have a significantly longer lifespan than traditional housing, contributing substantially to meeting the city’s high demand for shelter.
In addition to the technological advancements, Mayor Adanech emphasized that the project is designed to deliver high-quality homes efficiently and cost-effectively, while also creating employment opportunities for many citizens.
