Addis Ababa, January 4, 2026 (FMC) – The Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abebe, has emphasized that the city is actively developing its potential as a health tourism hub, highlighting the role of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
The remarks were made during the inauguration of Habari Medical Plaza, a facility offering 15 specialty and subspecialty medical services, yesterday.
The program was attended by Mayor Adanech Abebe, Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba, former President of Ethiopia Mulatu Teshome (PhD), and officials from the federal and city administrations.
Mayor Adanech stated that special attention is being paid to making the city a health tourism destination. She said that successful work is being done to improve the service capacity of existing health facilities and build new health facilities.
She explained that the work done to improve the health system of the capital is also recording positive changes, bringing public satisfaction.
She noted that the private sector will also be required to support the efforts to improve health services by providing resources to the three tertiary hospitals that have been completed in the capital.
She explained that Habari Medical Plaza is a testament to the significant contribution of the private sector if the government plays its leading role in creating a favorable environment.
She further emphasized the need to work together to provide quality and standard health services that are worthy of Addis Ababa’s status as a center for diplomatic and international institutions.
She pointed out that operational systems have been established to enhance health tourism in Addis Ababa; she assured that she will continue to work with special attention to expanding access to quality health services.
Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba emphasized the importance of strengthening stakeholder collaboration to ensure the quality and accessibility of health services. She noted that during this period, the policy of disease prevention and cure has been implemented by expanding the quality and accessibility of health services to citizens.
She further stated that she will continue to work to strengthen the digitalization of the health system under the Digital Ethiopia 2030 Strategy. She explained that efforts are underway to build the capacity of health professionals, modernize the drug supply chain, and increase the capacity of local manufacturers.
Dr. Mekdes also reiterated that the cooperation of stakeholders should continue to be strengthened in the effort to ensure high-quality and accessible health services.
Dr. Akeze Taeme, Founder and CEO of Habari Medical Plaza, said the facility provides outpatient services across 15 specialties and subspecialties and aims to offer services suitable for the city and its residents, reflecting the convenient and welcoming environment of Addis Ababa.
