Mayor Adanech Says Capital Residents Demonstrating People Are Source of Government Power Through Vote

Addis Ababa, June 1, 2026 (FMC) — Residents of Addis Ababa are demonstrating that they are the main source of power in forming government through strong participation in Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said today.

The election is currently underway across the country, with polling stations opening at 6:00 a.m. to allow citizens to cast their ballots.

Casting her vote this morning, Mayor Adanech said the electoral process is being conducted in a democratic, free, and fair manner.

She noted that the strong turnout in the capital reflects citizens actively exercising their constitutional role in shaping government through the ballot box.

The Mayor also emphasized the importance of citizens making use of their voter cards, urging eligible voters to fully exercise their rights rather than letting them go unused.

Ethiopia’s 7th General Election is being conducted under the observation of continental and domestic election observers.

The process is also seeing participation from 42 political parties as well as numerous independent candidates competing for seats at the federal and regional levels.
