Mayor says technology-driven efforts underway to transform Addis Ababa into a smart city

Addis Ababa, May 18, 2025 (FMC) — Addis Ababa is undergoing technology-driven transformation efforts aimed at turning the capital into a smart city, leveraging enhanced public service standards and multifaceted initiatives, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said.

The Mayor made the remarks during her visit to the ongoing Ethiopian Technology Expo (ETEX 2025), which ran from 16-18 May at the Addis International Convention Center.

The event was the largest of its kind ever held in East Africa.

Mayor Adanech highlighted Addis Ababa’s growing capacity to host major continental and international conferences, pointing to the multiple high-profile events held in the city over the past ten days as a testament to its emerging role as a regional hub for technology and innovation.

She noted that ETEX 2025 is a clear reflection of Ethiopia’s progress toward the realization of its Digital Ethiopia strategy, emphasizing that current digital advancements are setting the stage for transformative national development.

Reaffirming her administration’s commitment, the Mayor underscored ongoing efforts to integrate technology into the city’s infrastructure—an essential step, she said, in making Addis Ababa a beacon of innovation in the region.

“As we move forward with our smart city initiatives, residents can expect improved public services and a better quality of life, all driven by the strategic use of technology,” she stated.

ETEX 2025, co-organized by the Information Network Security Administration and the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, has been underway in the capital for the past three days.
