Addis Ababa, October 23, 2026 (FMC) — Schools across Ethiopia’s Tigray region are set to resume regular teaching and learning on Monday, October 26, as the regional Education Bureau confirms that preparations have been completed to bring students back to classrooms and restore education services disrupted by damage.
The regional Education Bureau announced that all schools are expected to restart regular academic activities from October 26, calling on teachers and students to complete their preparations and report to their assigned schools ready to begin classes.
As part of the preparations, executive officials of the Tigray region’s caretaker administration visited Emperor Yohannes General Secondary School in Mekelle to assess conditions and review the work undertaken to resume regular teaching and learning.
During the visit, the officials held discussions with teachers and school administrators and set directions for restarting education. They also stressed the responsibilities of teachers in welcoming students and sustaining classroom instruction, while urging parents to send their children back to school and support the continuation of learning.
The return to regular schooling is expected to help students resume their education and restore services interrupted by damage to school facilities. The regional Education Bureau called on teachers and students to finalize preparations and be present at their designated schools for the October 26 reopening.
The region-wide restart marks a further step in restoring essential public services and rebuilding educational continuity for students across the Tigray region.
