Addis Ababa, June 3, 2025 (FMC) – Model farmers’ village construction will significantly improve the livelihoods of local farmers and promote a healthier standard of living, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said after launching the construction of the fourth model farmers’ village in the Central Ethiopia region’s Silte Zone.
“In Werabet Shama Kebele, Hulbareg Woreda, Silte Zone, of the Central Ethiopia Region, we also commenced the construction of the fourth model farmers’ village which is a part of the rainy season goodwill/volunteer initiative. Once completed, these homes will significantly improve the livelihoods of local farmers and promote a healthier standard of living,” PM Abiy said.
The project is part of the rainy season goodwill/volunteer initiative aimed at improving rural living conditions and boosting agricultural productivity across the Central Ethiopia region. Since June 2, the Prime Minister has launched similar model village projects in other zones, including Halaba, Kembata, and Hadiya.
These model farmers’ villages are designed to be cost-effective and culturally grounded, incorporating sustainable and affordable materials. They feature off-grid capabilities such as water storage, separate animal shelters, biogas production systems, and vegetable gardens to support food self-sufficiency. Perimeter fencing made from sustainable materials enhances security while respecting environmental sustainability.
During his visit to the zone, the Prime Minister and his delegation also observed encouraging private sector participation in the agro-industry sector. As an example, they toured the Atot Integrated Agro-Industry facility.
“Initiatives like this should be encouraged, as they align well with the broader objectives set forth in the Bounty of the Basket initiative,” PM Abiy noted, emphasizing the importance of private sector engagement in Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation and economic growth.
Since 2018, PM Abiy has launched annual housing development projects during Ethiopia’s rainy season as part of nationwide volunteer efforts. Following successful urban housing initiatives, this year’s focus on rural communities under the Rural Corridor Development initiative marks a strategic expansion aimed at uplifting rural livelihoods and supporting sustainable agricultural development.
