More Regional Leaders Cast Ballots as Ethiopia’s 7th General Election Continues in Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Gambella

Addis Ababa, June 1, 2026 (FMC) — Chief Administrators of the Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Gambella regional states cast their ballots early this morning as voting continues across Ethiopia in the 7th General Election.

In the Afar Region, Chief Administrator Awol Arba exercised his democratic right at the Asada Polling Station in the Chifra constituency.

In the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, Chief Administrator Ashadli Hassan cast his ballot at the 02 Polling Station in the Buldglu constituency, where he is also contesting as a candidate.

In the Gambella Region, Chief Administrator Alemitu Umod voted at the Ukedi Bethlehem Primary Clinic Polling Station in the Gog constituency.

Following their participation, the regional leaders commended the peaceful conduct of the election and the enthusiastic turnout of citizens.

Afar Region Chief Administrator Awol Arba said elections serve as the foundation for building a strong democratic system and a resilient state. He expressed pride in voting alongside his constituents, noting that citizens are ultimately voting for lasting peace and freedom.

In Benishangul-Gumuz, Ashadli Hassan said the voting process has so far remained smooth, peaceful, and democratic. He noted that citizens began arriving at polling stations at dawn to exercise their right to choose their leaders for the coming term.

Similar participation was reported in Gambella’s Gog constituency, where residents turned out early in strong numbers, reflecting a strong sense of civic responsibility.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has deployed extensive logistical support nationwide to ensure voting is conducted in a transparent, credible, and inclusive manner.

More than 54 million voters are participating in this election cycle. A total of 42 political parties, 10,438 party nominees, and 80 independent candidates are competing for seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives and regional councils.

The representatives elected today will serve a five-year term, shaping the country’s legislative and governance direction.

Local and international observers present at various polling stations have reported that voting is continuing smoothly in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect.
