Addis Ababa, September 28, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Oromia Regional State Council, Chaffe Oromia, has re-elected Shimelis Abdisa as President of the regional state as it opened the first session of its seventh working term.
The council made the decision at its first regular session of the 2019 Ethiopian calendar year, which began today at the council’s hall in Adama.
Shimelis, who has served as Oromia’s chief administrator for the past seven years, will continue to lead the regional government following his re-election by the newly constituted council.
The session is also expected to oversee the reconstitution of the three branches of the regional government and consider appointments, draft laws and other key matters that will shape the region’s direction in the new term.
The council is further expected to set directions aimed at consolidating development and reform achievements registered in the region and advancing them during the new working period.
The opening of the seventh-term council follows Ethiopia’s 2026 general election, ushering in a new five-year political and administrative cycle at both federal and regional levels.
