Addis Ababa, September 30, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education announced today that the newly adopted school curriculum will include dedicated chapters and subchapters on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), elevating the dam’s status as both an educational subject and a national symbol.
Oumer Imam, the Ministry’s Director of Social Science Curriculum Development, said that the inclusion of GERD marks a shift in how the dam is taught — from a topic of political debate to one of socio-economic importance.
He explained that presenting the “general status” of the GERD in classrooms reinforces national sovereignty, nurtures patriotism, and contributes to the building of a unified, future-oriented generation.
“Just as our flag and national anthem symbolize Ethiopia on the world stage, we aim to make the Renaissance Dam a symbol woven into the fabric of our national identity,” Oumer said.
He stressed that educating children and youth about the dam’s role in Ethiopia’s development can inspire pride and purposeful engagement.
