New Generation of Voters Across Ethiopia Step Forward for First-Time Participation in Historic National Vote

Addis Ababa, May 31, 2026 (FMC) — A new generation of voters across Ethiopia’s regional states has expressed readiness and enthusiasm to participate in the 7th general election, with many preparing to cast their ballots for the first time in a historic moment of civic engagement.

Young voters across different parts of the country said they are prepared to take part in the electoral process using voter identification cards issued ahead of the election, noting that they are eagerly awaiting polling day scheduled for tomorrow.

First-time voters in particular described the election as a defining milestone, emphasizing that it represents their entry into national democratic participation. They said they view voting as an opportunity to contribute to shaping leadership and influencing the country’s future direction.

Youth participants also highlighted the importance of civic responsibility, stating that participation in the election reflects both constitutional rights and a broader commitment to nation-building. They emphasized that young people have a critical role in strengthening democratic practice through active engagement.

In various parts of the country, young citizens said they have made preparations to ensure timely participation in the voting process, underscoring that this election represents a significant moment in their civic and political life.

They also called on fellow young voters to participate peacefully and responsibly, stressing that informed participation is key to ensuring a credible and orderly electoral process.

The 7th general election, scheduled for June 1, 2026, is expected to involve more than 54 million registered voters nationwide, making it one of the largest democratic exercises in Ethiopia’s history.
