New Momentum in Ethiopia–U.S. Economic Ties at Global Finance Talks

Addis Ababa, April 19, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and the United States have renewed efforts to deepen economic cooperation, with fresh momentum emerging from high-level engagements held during the 2026 World Bank–IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide led Ethiopia’s delegation in discussions with senior officials from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, focusing on expanding trade and investment relations.

Key areas of engagement included strategic investment opportunities such as the planned Bishoftu International Airport, as both sides explored avenues to enhance private sector participation and long-term economic collaboration.

U.S. officials welcomed Ethiopia’s ongoing reform progress and reiterated their support for the country’s economic transformation through technical assistance, strengthened private sector engagement, and continued collaboration with international financial institutions.

The discussions concluded with a shared commitment to advance common economic priorities aimed at accelerating growth and broadening bilateral economic ties.
