NISS Credits Joint Security Framework and Public Maturity for Peaceful Nationwide Election Process

Addis Ababa, June 2, 2026 (FMC) — The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has credited coordinated efforts among security institutions and the public’s civic maturity for the peaceful conduct and successful completion of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election.

In a statement, the service said that the election, held nationwide on June 1, 2026, was conducted in a generally stable security environment, supported by joint operational coordination between federal and regional security and intelligence structures.

NISS stated that its leadership provided strategic coordination before, during, and after the election period, working closely with relevant institutions to support a secure environment for voters across the country.

The agency highlighted what it described as effective collaboration among security and intelligence bodies operating at multiple levels, noting that joint frameworks contributed to maintaining order and ensuring continuity throughout the electoral process.

According to the statement, security personnel carried out duties across various regions in line with national coordination mechanisms, contributing to what NISS described as a stable environment for citizens to exercise their constitutional rights.

NISS also commended Ethiopian citizens for what it described as high levels of civic responsibility, patience, and maturity demonstrated during the voting process. It noted that voters participated peacefully across diverse conditions, including long queues and extended voting hours in some areas.

The service further stated that public cooperation with security institutions played a significant role in maintaining calm throughout election day, reflecting what it described as a strong national commitment to stability during a major democratic exercise.

Recalling pre-election preparations, NISS said various institutional readiness measures were undertaken in coordination with relevant bodies to support security operations, including planning, training, and operational deployment strategies designed to safeguard the electoral process.

The agency indicated that it will continue working with partner institutions in the post-election period to support stability as the country transitions into vote counting, verification, and results announcement phases.

The statement was issued as Ethiopia moves into the post-election stage following the conclusion of nationwide voting in the 7th General Election, with electoral authorities expected to begin releasing official results in the coming hours.
