Addis Ababa, March 22, 2026 (FMC) — Addis Ababa celebrated the inaugural all-women 5km street race on Sunday morning, drawing enthusiastic participation from women across the capital.
The event was held under the inspiring theme “Smile to Inspire.”
Mayor of Addis Ababa, Ms. Adanech Abiebie, highlighted that women are capable of achieving their goals with confidence and determination.
She emphasized the importance of collective effort in promoting the prosperity of the country.
The mayor also noted that she officially launched the race this morning, which attracted 16,000 women.
Organized annually by the Great Ethiopian Run, this year’s edition coincided with the city’s infrastructure improvements, particularly the corridor development along the Bole-Atlas-Urael road, which has been transformed into a modern, convenient, and visually appealing route for residents and visitors.
The event brought together women from all walks of life, including senior government officials, former athletes, diplomats, and other invited guests, celebrating both fitness and female empowerment in the capital.
