Over 517 million trees planted nationwide by early afternoon in Ethiopia’s single-day green legacy drive

Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) — As of 1:00 PM local time, Ethiopians across the country had planted over 517.3 million tree seedlings, achieving 74 percent of the national target to plant 700 million trees in a single day, according to the Government Communication Service.

The Green Legacy Initiative’s seventh-round mass planting campaign, held under the theme “Renewal Through Planting”, has seen 21.6 million people participate nationwide so far.

Briefing journalists from the Green Legacy Situation Room, State Minister of Government Communication Service Tesfahun Gobezay said the scale and pace of public participation in today’s campaign reaffirm the country’s commitment to restoring degraded landscapes and building climate resilience.

Ethiopia plans to plant a total of 8 billion tree seedlings during the current rainy season, with the single-day effort serving as a major national mobilization to accelerate this goal.
