Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (FMC) — More than 700 million tree seedlings have been planted so far in Ethiopia’s nationwide one-day Green Legacy tree planting campaign, Government Communication Service Minister Enetealem Melese announced.
The minister said that as of 4 PM today, more than 22.2 million Ethiopians had taken part in the nationwide tree planting campaign.
The seedlings planted so far cover over 256,000 hectares of land, according to the minister, who highlighted the strong public participation in the country’s ongoing environmental restoration efforts.
The one-day campaign is part of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, a nationwide effort aimed at restoring degraded landscapes, expanding forest coverage and enhancing climate resilience through large-scale tree planting.
