Addis Ababa, July 31, 2025 (FMC) — Following the official kickoff of the one-day nationwide campaign to plant 700 million tree seedlings in Jimma earlier today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and First Lady Zinash Tayachew returned to Addis Ababa to lead a symbolic tree planting activity at Yeka Mountains, located on the northern outskirts of the capital.
Joined by senior officials and staff members of the Office of the Prime Minister, the couple actively planted saplings in this green space as part of Ethiopia’s ongoing Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to restore degraded lands, enhance biodiversity, and combat climate change.
The Yeka Mountains planting event underscores the government’s sustained commitment to environmental renewal and national development. It also serves as a call for all Ethiopians to participate in this historic campaign under the theme “Renewal Through Planting.”
Earlier this morning, millions across Ethiopia joined the ambitious effort to plant 700 million seedlings in a single day, marking one of the largest tree planting campaigns worldwide.
The Green Legacy Initiative, launched in 2019 by PM Abiy Ahmed, targets planting approximately 8 billion seedlings during this year’s rainy season to promote climate resilience and sustainable growth.
