Addis Ababa, November 22, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed held discussions with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Johannesburg ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
In a statement shared on social media this morning, the Prime Minister said the meeting focused on presenting a common African voice and shared priorities at the summit.
“On the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit, I met with our host, President Cyril Ramaphosa, to discuss a range of issues, including the importance of presenting a common Africa voice and shared priorities, especially as this historic G20 is being hosted on African soil,” he noted.
Prime Minister Abiy is in South Africa with a high-level Ethiopian delegation for the 2025 G20 Summit. On Friday, he also participated in a meeting of African heads of state and government convened ahead of the summit for coordinated consultations.
South Africa is hosting the G20 Summit on 22–23 November 2025 in Johannesburg, marking the first time the summit is held on the African continent.
The summit is taking place under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”, with agendas focusing on development financing, debt sustainability, climate transitions, and equitable global growth.
A G20 Social Summit was held from 18–20 November in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, engaging civil society groups, including youth, women, persons with disabilities, and faith-based organizations.
The preparatory meetings underscore Africa’s coordinated approach in the lead-up to the historic summit.
