Addis Ababa, May 9, 2026 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has arrived in Djibouti to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia confirmed in a social media post this morning.
President-elect Ismaïl Omar Guelleh is scheduled to be sworn in today following his re-election in the presidential vote held on April 10, 2026. According to official electoral results, he secured an overwhelming victory with about 97–98% of the vote, extending his long-standing leadership in the country.
Guelleh, who has been in power since 1999, won a sixth presidential term in the election, which followed the removal of the presidential age limit by parliament in 2025. His continued leadership further extends one of the longest tenures in the Horn of Africa.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is among several regional leaders expected to attend the inauguration ceremony in the Djiboutian capital.
