Addis Ababa, July 28, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has urged world leaders to renew their shared commitment to building food systems that are resilient, inclusive, and just, as the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit officially opened today in Addis Ababa.
Delivering opening remarks at the high-level session held at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Prime Minister Abiy described the gathering as a critical moment of reflection and global resolve. “This is a moment to take stock — and to renew our shared commitment to building food systems that are resilient, inclusive, and just,” he affirmed.
The summit, co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy, has drawn the participation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, several heads of state and government, and high-level dignitaries from around the world.
Held for the first time on African soil, the summit underscores the continent’s growing role in shaping global food policy and addressing interconnected challenges of food security, sustainability, and equity. In this context, Prime Minister Abiy’s remarks set the tone for discussions aimed at translating commitments into practical action—particularly for the world’s most vulnerable populations.
The event marks a key milestone in the global food systems agenda, offering leaders an opportunity to assess progress since the inaugural 2021 summit and to reinforce international cooperation in the face of rising climate and geopolitical pressures.
