Addis Ababa, May 13, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has unveiled a special commemorative stamp collection marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, highlighting the long-standing partnership between Ethiopia and the UN under the theme “To Live Together in Peace.”
The collection was unveiled by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa, in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and senior officials, as part of commemorations marking eight decades of the United Nations.
In a social media post shared after the event, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the four-stamp series reflects his country’s shared history with the United Nations, from the signing of the UN Charter in 1945 in San Francisco, to Ethiopia’s contribution to peacekeeping operations in the Congo, as well as hosting the first-ever UN Security Council meeting on African soil.
He noted that the commemorative stamps will be distributed to 192 countries through the International Postal Union, describing them as a lasting tribute to a legacy that belongs not to one moment, but to every generation.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also expressed appreciation to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his team for their leadership in advancing peace, development, and human rights during a period of complex global challenges.
He further emphasized that the United Nations endures because nations continue to choose dialogue over division, adding that Ethiopia will continue to uphold this principle in global affairs.
The event was held in Addis Ababa as part of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ working visit to Ethiopia, which includes high-level engagements with national and continental leadership and participation in UN–AU commemorative and policy events marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
The ceremony’s central purpose was also to commemorate the UN’s 80th anniversary and to highlight the enduring Ethiopia–United Nations partnership through symbolic reflection on shared history, cooperation, and multilateral engagement.
