Addis Ababa, January 16, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden passing of renowned Ethiopian artist Netsanet Workneh, who died earlier today following a sudden illness.
The artist’s death was confirmed by local media outlet EBS Television, where Netsanet had worked for many years as a prominent television host.
In a message shared on his social media platforms, Prime Minister Abiy said he was deeply saddened by the loss of the acclaimed artist, extending his condolences to Netsanet’s family, friends, and admirers.
The Prime Minister recalled Netsanet’s notable role during the 2016 Ethiopian New Year’s Eve celebration held at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), an event attended by senior federal and regional officials. Netsanet served as the host of the program, which Abiy said helped usher in the New Year with joy and excitement.
Netsanet Workneh was widely recognized in Ethiopia’s artistic community for his versatility, with a career spanning television hosting, acting, film, and theater. He was best known to television audiences as the long-time host of a popular family game show broadcast on EBS Television.
His film credits include several well-known local productions such as City Boys, Salnegrat, Yanchiw Leba 2, FBI, Mr. X, and Chombe, where he earned praise for his dynamic performances. In theater, he was introduced to audiences through the play Fresh Man, which marked an important milestone in his artistic journey.
Netsanet Workneh is survived by his wife and three children.
