PM Abiy Ahmed Inaugurates First Phase of the Ogaden Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Project in Somali Region, Launches Second Phase

Addis Ababa, October 2, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated the first phase of the Ogaden Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Project in Calub, Somali Region, today with an annual production capacity of 111 million liters.

At the same time, the second phase of the project was launched, which will add an annual capacity of 1.33 billion liters, the Prime Minister confirmed on his social media page.

In his message, the Premier said the facility extends beyond liquified natural gas production.

He also emphasized that it contributes significantly to energy generation, with a production capacity of 1,000 megawatts, and serves as a critical input for fertilizer production, supporting Ethiopia’s efforts toward food sovereignty.

The plant also provides essential resources for energy and crypto-mining initiatives.

PM Abiy emphasized that the mega projects inaugurated and launched in the Somali Region today, collectively valued at USD 10 billion including associated infrastructure, will be completed as planned, reflecting the government’s commitment to finishing what it starts.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a urea fertilizer plant and the Gode Oil Refinery in Gode, Somali Region, marking another major step in Ethiopia’s industrial and agricultural development.
