Addis Ababa, September 10, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today inaugurated the first phase of the expansion of a state-of-the-art logistics center in Mojo, describing the 60-hectare facility as a major step in Ethiopia’s efforts to make the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) a success for the country and the continent.
In a message shared on his social media pages following the inauguration, Prime Minister Abiy said the logistics hub is designed to strengthen Ethiopia’s capacity to handle cargo, support domestic value addition and expand its links with regional and continental markets.
The center features terminals and warehouses capable of handling up to one million 20-foot containers annually, according to the Prime Minister.
Abiy said the facility will allow dry bulk cargo to be packaged domestically, helping save foreign currency while opening up broader employment opportunities for Ethiopians.
The logistics center also features what the Prime Minister described as Ethiopia’s first-ever Rail-Mounted Gantry crane, which enables containers to be moved at high speed from the railway line, enhancing the efficiency of cargo handling at the facility.
Built on fully digital infrastructure, the center is intended to provide faster and more reliable logistics services, Abiy said, highlighting technology as another component of Ethiopia’s effort to modernize its trade and transport infrastructure.
The Prime Minister said the facility goes beyond Ethiopia’s existing connection to the Ethio-Djibouti railway line, forming part of the DESSU Corridor linking Ethiopia, South Sudan and Uganda.
He described the development as a milestone that strengthens Ethiopia’s position in the global logistics sector while opening a new chapter in regional economic integration.
The Mojo hub, as outlined by Abiy, therefore places logistics infrastructure at the center of Ethiopia’s continental trade ambitions, connecting domestic cargo handling and value addition with wider regional transport networks and the implementation of AfCFTA.
The inauguration comes as Ethiopia continues to frame infrastructure development and regional connectivity as practical foundations for deeper economic integration across Africa.
