Addis Ababa, January 17, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, accompanied by First Lady Zinash Tayachew, presided over the official handover of a new boarding school in Surma Woreda, South West Ethiopia People’s Regional State, on Saturday.
The ceremony, attended by regional officials including the South West Ethiopia Chief Administrator Negash Wagesho, took place at the school compound.
Students and local community members were also present as school materials were formally handed over, images from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s social media post show.
The ribbon-cutting was performed by First Lady Zinash Tayachew and Chief Administrator Negash Wagesho, marking the completion of the facility built by the Office of the First Lady.
The boarding school features dormitories, classrooms, a computer laboratory powered by solar energy, a clean water well, a fully equipped kitchen, a library, and an administration building, the Prime Minister disclosed in his social media post.
PM Abiy described the facility as a major milestone for education in the region, providing a holistic learning environment aimed at promoting both academic achievement and student well-being.
“As the facility built by the Office of the First Lady is officially handed over, we celebrate a major milestone for education in Surma woreda of South West Ethiopia,” he noted.
He added, “The school is a boarding institution primarily serving students from the region. The campus features dormitories, classrooms, a computer laboratory with several dozen computers powered by solar energy, a clean water well, a fully equipped kitchen, a library, and a dedicated administration building.”
“This holistic learning environment is designed to support both academic excellence and student well-being, creating new opportunities for young learners to thrive,” he further asserted.
Recall that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and First Lady Zinash Tayachew travelled to Southwest Ethiopia Regional State this morning.
