PM Abiy Ahmed Reaffirms Federal Government’s Commitment to Rebuild Tigray Region through Peace, Governance and Dev’t

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to rebuilding Tigray Region, emphasizing that lasting peace, effective governance and economic development are essential to securing a better future for its people.

In a Tigrigna-language interview broadcast across Fana Media Corporation (FMC) platforms, the Prime Minister called for an end to the cycle of conflict and urged the people of Tigray Region to work towards peace, reunite their families and redirect their efforts towards rebuilding their communities.

He stressed the importance of enabling citizens to resume normal life and participate in the region’s recovery.

The reaffirmation comes as the federal government continues efforts to restore law and order, re-establish governance through a caretaker administration and restore essential public services in Tigray Region. These ongoing measures are intended to move the region beyond the immediate challenges of conflict and establish the conditions for reconstruction, economic recovery and a return to normal life.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of preserving institutions and ensuring that regular regional governance is established through elections. A stable political and administrative environment, alongside respect for constitutional order, is essential to ensuring that the region’s recovery is sustained and that its people can pursue their aspirations without the disruption of renewed conflict.

He also called on armed youth to lay down their weapons and return peacefully to civilian life through the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration process. Those responsible for crimes must be held accountable under national law, while the wider population should be able to live in peace and contribute to rebuilding the region.

Beyond restoring stability, the task is to revive the productive sectors that can support livelihoods and generate new opportunities. The Prime Minister pointed to agriculture and irrigation, mining, industry and urban corridor development as areas that can contribute to Tigray Region’s economic recovery and strengthen its role in Ethiopia’s broader development.

His message placed peace and development at the centre of the region’s future. Rebuilding requires not only an end to hostilities but also the restoration of institutions, the revival of economic activity and the participation of the people in shaping their communities.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the federal government remains committed to working towards these objectives, with the ultimate goal of enabling the people of Tigray Region to recover from conflict, rebuild their lives and share in Ethiopia’s national progress.
