Addis Ababa, February 22, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said expanding irrigation development through the effective use of available surface and groundwater resources remains a central pillar of ongoing efforts to transform Ethiopia’s agricultural sector.
The Prime Minister paid a visit to the Bilate River basin area earlier today, where he observed irrigation-supported agricultural activities and ongoing fruit development projects.
In a social media post after his visit to the site, PM Abiy noted that areas that previously delivered limited agricultural value are now being transformed into productive development centers through irrigation-based initiatives.
He cited the Bilate River basin as a notable example, noting that extensive fruit development projects are being carried out in the area with the participation of private investors.
The Prime Minister underscored that such initiatives will significantly strengthen the country’s broader efforts to ensure food sovereignty.
