PM Abiy Announces August 3 as Ethiopia’s Historic 800 Million-Seedling Planting Day

Addis Ababa, July 29, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia‘s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that the East African country will hold its nationwide Green Legacy campaign on August 3, aiming to plant 800 million tree seedlings in a single day through the united participation of citizens across the country.
In a message shared this morning, the Prime Minister said only five days remain before the landmark environmental campaign, calling on Ethiopians to make the necessary preparations and mobilize for the national effort.
Abiy urged citizens to rise with determination during the remaining days and contribute to what he described as a historic achievement that would demonstrate the country’s unity and collective commitment to environmental restoration.
He also encouraged Ethiopians to “plant hope” by taking part in the campaign, emphasizing that the success of the initiative depends on the active participation of people nationwide.
The nationwide tree-planting campaign forms part of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which seeks to restore degraded landscapes, expand forest cover, strengthen climate resilience, and advance sustainable development through mass afforestation.
This year’s campaign targets the planting of 800 million seedlings in a single day, making it one of the most ambitious environmental mobilization efforts undertaken by the country.
