Addis Ababa, July 5, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, leading a high-level Ethiopian delegation ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit.
Upon arrival, Prime Minister Abiy held bilateral discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“Ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, I had the pleasure of meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss bilateral and multilateral issues,” the Prime Minister stated on his official social media channels.
He emphasized that the meeting marks another step forward in strengthening Ethiopia–Brazil relations, which have seen significant growth in recent years.
The two leaders agreed to further enhance trade and investment cooperation across various sectors.
The 17th BRICS Leaders Summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro from July 6–7, 2025, under Brazil’s presidency. Held under the theme “Inclusive and Sustainable Global South,” the summit will bring together heads of state and government to deliberate on key global priorities including trade and investment, climate action, health cooperation, and artificial intelligence governance.
Leaders are also expected to explore mechanisms for increasing trade in national currencies, while putting aside discussions of a shared BRICS currency for the time being.
