Addis Ababa, November 8, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has commended the rapid progress of major development works in Bahir Dar, including the modernization of the Bahir Dar International Stadium and new tourism projects along the city’s Lake Tana waterfront.
During his visit to Bahir Dar, the Prime Minister reviewed ongoing efforts aimed at transforming the city into one of Ethiopia’s leading tourism and investment destinations.
He inspected the Bahir Dar International Stadium, which is undergoing large-scale upgrades to meet the standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
With a seating capacity of 52,000 spectators, the stadium has completed its seating installation and turf works, while essential infrastructure, including the lighting system, is being developed to meet international requirements.
Once completed, the facility is expected to host both national and international sports events, contributing to the city’s growing profile as a sports and cultural hub.
The Prime Minister also visited the Fellege Ghion Resort, a major lakefront development modeled after the Gorgora Eco Lodge project recently inaugurated on the northern shores of Lake Tana.
Situated along Bahir Dar’s scenic shoreline, the resort is expected to significantly boost the city’s tourism appeal and create new employment opportunities for local youth.
In addition, the Ethiopian Maritime Transport and Logistics Company is constructing an Ethio-Ferries branch office in Bahir Dar, expanding lake transport services that connect the city with nearby destinations such as Gorgora.
This initiative is designed to improve mobility, support tourism, and strengthen Bahir Dar’s integration with other Lake Tana development projects.
Prime Minister Abiy noted that the combined efforts underway in Bahir Dar — from sports infrastructure to tourism and transport — reflect the government’s broader vision to promote sustainable urban growth, youth employment, and regional economic transformation.
