Addis Ababa, January 31, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today inaugurated the Shabeely Resort in the Somali Region, describing the project as a reflection of Ethiopia’s growing emergence as a leading tourism destination in Africa.

The resort, developed on 385 hectares in the Somali Region, was presented as a flagship achievement of the “Dine for Generation” initiative.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister highlighted the far-reaching transformation underway in the region, noting that the Somali Region has become a center for major development projects. These include the construction of thousands of kilometers of roads, the advancement of gas development projects, and the establishment of industrial ventures such as car assembly plants.

PM Abiy also underscored the ongoing urban renewal in Jigjiga, the capital of the Somali Region. He said the corridor development has reshaped the city’s outlook and emphasized that the Somali people’s distinctive architectural approaches and housing construction practices offer valuable lessons that could be replicated nationwide.

Commending the regional administration, the Prime Minister praised its strong commitment to advancing both urban and rural development. He stated that the successful completion of the Shabeely Resort is a source of pride not only for Ethiopia but also for the wider Horn of Africa, describing the region’s governance as a model for the sub-region.

While acknowledging the progress achieved so far, PM Abiy stressed that the work ahead remains substantial. He urged leaders to further expand and elevate Jigjiga’s development, envisioning its transformation into a city of continental prominence, and cautioned against complacency, underscoring the need for sustained and determined effort to fully realize the region’s potential.

The Shabeely Resort features a 10,000-tree fruit park, an authentic camel park, and more than 15 kilometers of shaded walkways. It also includes modern hospitality services and high-tech conference facilities, reflecting the Medemer philosophy of growth through collective effort.

Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation to all those involved in realizing the project, noting that their dedication has helped convert Ethiopia’s natural assets into a shared legacy for both national and international visitors.
