Addis Ababa, September 13, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has connected Ethiopia’s global air network, regional electricity links and the African Union’s presence in Addis Ababa to the country’s role in advancing wider partnership between BRICS and Africa.
Addressing the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Abiy said Ethiopia brings important forms of connectivity to the partnership, pointing to Ethiopian Airlines’ links between Africa and the world, the country’s electricity supply to neighboring economies and Addis Ababa’s role as the home of the African Union.
“Ethiopian Airlines links Africa to the world. Our electricity now serves neighboring economies. And Addis Ababa is home to the African Union,” he said.
The Prime Minister described these as “platforms for wider partnership,” directly linking Ethiopia’s existing connections across transport, energy and continental institutions to its engagement within BRICS.
Building on that point, he said Ethiopia supports “a strong consultation between BRICS and the African Union” so that engagement with Africa is better aligned with Agenda 2063.
The call places Ethiopia’s connectivity within a broader BRICS-Africa engagement, with the Prime Minister highlighting the need for the relationship with the continent to connect more closely with Africa’s own long-term development framework.
His remarks thus brought together three distinct dimensions of Ethiopia’s international role — its aviation network connecting Africa globally, its regional electricity links and Addis Ababa’s institutional position as the seat of the African Union — as concrete platforms through which wider partnerships can be developed.
For Ethiopia, he said, these assets form part of what it brings to the BRICS partnership, alongside its readiness to contribute to cooperation across the wider grouping.
