PM Abiy Flags Risks of Misinformation, Extremism and Unregulated Media Practices

Addis Ababa, May 9, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has cautioned against misinformation, extremist narratives, and the misuse of media freedom, noting that some actors within the media and digital space are driven by personal interests or external agendas.

Addressing the national consultative forum titled “Media Progress for Narrative Building,” held in Addis Ababa in his presence, the Prime Minister reviewed progress in Ethiopia’s ongoing media sector reforms alongside media leaders and stakeholders.

He acknowledged that media freedom has expanded significantly under the reform process, while noting that its practical exercise has also introduced emerging challenges.

Prime Minister Abiy observed that some bloggers and media practitioners circulate misleading content or propaganda, at times influenced by external actors or personal gain. He added that financial constraints in certain cases may also pressure media institutions to operate beyond their professional mandate.

He underlined that government support to the media sector is aimed at strengthening institutional resilience and ensuring that professionals are not compelled to leave the industry due to economic hardship.

The Prime Minister stressed that media practitioners are expected to exercise their freedom with balance and responsibility, adding that professionalism must remain central in an evolving media environment.

He also cautioned that extreme ideologies—whether political, religious, or otherwise—do not produce positive outcomes, citing historical experience as evidence of their divisive impact. He urged media institutions to avoid amplifying polarizing narratives and instead contribute to constructive national discourse.

He further emphasized that media institutions must remain mindful of their social responsibility, noting that freedom must be exercised in parallel with accountability and adherence to ethical standards.
