Addis Ababa, July 12, 2026 (FMC) β€” Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated the revitalized King Tekle Haymanot Airport in Debre Markos city, Amhara Region, following a major rehabilitation project that restored the facility after nearly three decades of inactivity.

The Prime Minister said the airport, which had remained out of service for close to 30 years, has been modernized, upgraded to a higher standard, and rebuilt to meet current aviation needs.

In a social media post shared after the inauguration, Prime Minister Abiy said the airport had been eagerly awaited by the people of Debre Markos and surrounding communities for many years.

He stated that the upgraded airport has a 2,400-meter-long and 30-meter-wide runway, giving it the capacity to accommodate large passenger and cargo aircraft, including Q400 and B737 planes.

The Prime Minister said the resumption of operations at King Tekle Haymanot Airport will significantly enhance trade, investment, and tourism activities in the area, opening a new chapter for economic growth in Debre Markos and the country at large.

He added that the government will continue demonstrating its commitment through action by addressing development needs step by step, completing major projects that have been launched, and ensuring their delivery for public use with quality and speed.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that turning challenges into opportunities remains central to the government’s efforts to expand development initiatives and provide infrastructure that benefits communities.
