Addis Ababa, February 22, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that Ethiopia’s defense modernization and strategic preparedness efforts are intended to advance peace and stability across Africa, linking military development to broader continental security objectives.
He made the remarks during the 65th anniversary celebrations of Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command, held at Hawassa International Stadium with senior military and government officials in attendance.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to regional peace, security, and prosperity, emphasizing that ongoing military development serves as a foundation for stability and cooperative security.
He noted that Ethiopia’s strategic preparations are designed to support peace across Africa and to strengthen the country’s role as a partner in regional stability.
According to the Prime Minister, the modernization of defense capabilities reflects a broader effort to enhance security readiness while contributing to collective peace and development.
He highlighted that Ethiopia seeks to act as a stabilizing force, offering cooperation and support to neighboring states in the pursuit of shared security objectives.
The Prime Minister also underscored the evolution of Ethiopia’s defense strategy, noting the expansion of military training beyond traditional land operations to include maritime competencies.
He described this shift as part of a long-term vision aimed at leveraging opportunities associated with maritime engagement and water resources, framing them as drivers of development and strategic potential.
Initiatives such as riverside development projects, dam construction, and technological integration were cited as examples of Ethiopia’s efforts to utilize natural resources for economic growth and innovation.
The Prime Minister emphasized that these developments demonstrate the principle that water and environmental resources can serve as foundations for progress and prosperity.
He further announced the establishment of a technologically advanced elite force equipped with drone reconnaissance systems and precision capabilities designed to enhance security and deter emerging threats.
The specialized unit, he explained, will focus on protecting strategic locations and supporting regional stability by addressing security challenges proactively.
Prime Minister Abiy reiterated that Ethiopia’s mission extends beyond its borders in cooperation with regional partners, aiming to strengthen peace and prosperity from neighboring states to the broader African continent.
He stressed that the country’s defense institutions are being reinforced to prevent instability and respond effectively when necessary.
Referring to Ethiopia’s internationally recognized contributions to peacekeeping operations, he described the defense forces as disciplined and technologically advanced formations committed to safeguarding sovereignty and supporting global peace initiatives.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s role as a contributor to African peace and development.
“Together, we advance toward a future defined by security, cooperation, and shared progress,” he stated.
