Addis Ababa, March 14, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has expressed sorrow over the loss of lives caused by a sudden landslide triggered by Belg rains in Gacho Baba and other districts of the Gamo Zone in the South Ethiopia Region.
Earlier today, the Prime Minister traveled to the affected areas in Arbaminch and surrounding communities in the Gamo Zone, where he met with local residents and conveyed his condolences in person to families and communities impacted by the tragedy.
In a message shared on social media following the visit, the Prime Minister extended his condolences to the families of citizens who died in the disaster. “I express my sorrow over the loss of the lives of our citizens who died due to the sudden landslide disaster that occurred as a result of the Belg rains in Gacho Baba and other districts of the Gamo Zone in the South Ethiopia Region,” he noted.
The Prime Minister confirmed that his government will continue to provide the necessary support to those affected. He also stressed the importance of undertaking appropriate studies and implementing measures aimed at addressing the problem in a sustainable manner.
He underlined, “The government will continue to provide the necessary support to our affected fellow citizens. Appropriate studies and work must also be carried out to resolve the problem in a sustainable manner”
The Prime Minister further underscored the need for preventive actions to help mitigate similar disasters in the future.
