PM Abiy offically launches 2025 Green Legacy planting season with call for collective action

Addis Ababa, June 27, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially launched this year’s Green Legacy planting season under the theme “Renewal Through Planting”, reaffirming the national commitment to environmental restoration and climate resilience.

Images shared on the Prime Minister’s social media channels show that the official launch ceremony brought together a diverse mix of participants—including senior federal and regional officials, ministers, representatives from various sectors, elders, students, members of the diplomatic community based in Addis Ababa, and citizens from all walks of life—reflecting the inclusive spirit of this year’s Green Legacy season.

In a message shared on his official social media channels Friday evening, the Prime Minister revealed that the country aims to plant enough seedlings this year to bring the total number planted under the Green Legacy Initiative to 47.5 billion.

The nationwide campaign, which began in 2019, aspires to reach a cumulative total of 54 billion seedlings by next year.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Ethiopians who believed in this vision—to those who took part, touched the soil, planted the seedlings, nurtured them, championed the cause, and supported the dream, both at home and abroad,” the Prime Minister said.

Calling for inclusive participation, Premier Abiy urged all sectors of society and the diplomatic community in Ethiopia to engage actively in the planting efforts.

“Starting tomorrow, I call on all sectors of society and the diplomatic community to actively engage in the Green Legacy program—a daily symbol of Ethiopia’s renewal, resilience, and collective spirit,” he added.

The Green Legacy Initiative has drawn international attention as one of the world’s largest climate-centered afforestation efforts, contributing not only to environmental restoration but also to job creation and awareness-building across the country.
