Addis Ababa, October 28, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today emphasized Ethiopia’s legal and natural right to utilize the Abbay (Nile) waters, underlining the country’s commitment to equitable and peaceful regional cooperation.
Speaking during the ongoing session of the House of People’s Representatives, PM Abiy stressed that Ethiopia’s national interests regarding the Abbay have long been undermined, adding that historical inequities and unjust decisions cannot continue to dictate the country’s future.
“Ethiopia has long faced unjust decisions made against its national interests. It is Ethiopia’s natural and legal right to utilize the Nile waters. The river’s resources are sufficient for shared and equitable use,” PM Abiy stated.
He further underscored the close historical and cultural ties between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt, noting that the Nubian and Misr civilizations are closely linked to Ethiopia’s own ancient heritage. “Ethiopia’s position remains clear: both Egyptians and Sudanese are our brothers. Therefore, what is most beneficial is to grow together through dialogue and cooperation. Ethiopia will neither plan nor act in a way that harms any party,” the Prime Minister added.
PM Abiy highlighted that the combined landmass and populations of Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt—home to over 300 million people—present enormous potential for regional prosperity if these nations work in harmony. Ethiopia, he affirmed, continues to prioritize cooperative engagement over conflict, advocating for dialogue, equitable resource sharing, and mutual development.
Speaking on Ethiopia’s quest for direct access to the Red Sea, PM Abiy reaffirmed that the pursuit is irreversible and grounded in legal, historic, geographic, and economic rights. “Ethiopia will not remain landlocked, whether anyone likes it or not. Our efforts to secure direct access to the sea are being pursued legally and diplomatically, with ongoing engagement of the international community. Ethiopia seeks only peace, development, and shared prosperity with its neighbors,” he stated.
