Addis Ababa, January 2, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia’s tea development drive, being implemented as part of the national Green Legacy Initiative, is progressing successfully and showing encouraging early results.
In a message shared on social media on today, the Prime Minister noted that the initiative has made a promising start at the planting stage.
He said that if this progress is sustained through full agro-processing and supported by private sector participation to add value, the tea development effort could benefit the country by boosting exports while also meeting domestic consumption needs.
The Green Legacy Initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy in 2019, is a nationwide environmental and economic program under which more than 48 billion tree seedlings have been planted to date, with tea development identified as one of its key productive components.
