Arbaminch, March 14, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed traveled directly to Arbaminch today following his return from the United Arab Emirates to pay respects to those who lost their lives in communities across Arbaminch and the wider Gamo Zone, the Office of the Prime Minister confirmed.
According to the PM Office, the visit also includes an on-site assessment of relief efforts underway in the affected areas.
The region has been hit by days of heavy rainfall, which triggered devastating floods and landslides. Swelling waters from the Kulfo River inundated neighborhoods, causing significant damage to homes, farmland, and local infrastructure.
As local communities continue to mourn the victims, rescue and relief operations are ongoing. During his visit, the Prime Minister expressed solidarity with every family affected by the disaster and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting those impacted.
It is known that Ethiopia has announced a three-day national mourning period last night following a deadly landslide in the Gamo Zone of South Ethiopia region. According to a statement from the Hosue of People’s Respresentatives of thiopia (HoPR) announced that, in accordance with Flag Proclamation No. 654/2001, a three-day national mourning period will be observed beginning March 14, 2026.
It is noteworthy that PM Abiy Ahmed has returned today to Ethiopia from his working visit to the UAE where he met and held talks with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the Middle East nation. He also had a discussions with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
