Addis Ababa, September 9, 2025 (FMC) – South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has praised the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a historic achievement and a symbol of regional progress, announcing plans for South Sudan to sign a power agreement with Ethiopia to access electricity from the dam.
The GERD was officially inaugurated today by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during a high-level ceremony attended by leaders from across Africa and the Caribbean.
Speaking at the event, President Kiir described the dam as more than a national project, calling it a beacon of unity, resilience, and shared aspirations.
“This dam is more than just a project. It is a symbol of unity, sacrifice, and determination,” said President Kiir. “It shows what a nation can achieve when its people stand together with one vision. This is a proud day for Ethiopia and for our entire region.”
Attending the ceremony as a guest of honor, President Kiir extended warm congratulations on behalf of the government and people of South Sudan.
He emphasized the deep-rooted ties between South Sudan and Ethiopia, stating, “Ethiopia is not just a neighbor — you are our brothers and sisters. We share history, friendship, and a common future.”
He added, “The progress of one nation is the progress of all.”
In a key announcement, President Kiir revealed South Sudan’s intention to sign an agreement to access electricity generated by the GERD. He emphasized the transformative potential this holds for his country’s development.
“We plan to sign an agreement to receive power from this great dam, which will bring electricity to our towns, villages, schools, and hospitals — opening new doors of opportunity for our people,” he said.
He noted that the access to power would help improve livelihoods, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen regional cooperation.
President Kiir concluded his remarks by congratulating the Ethiopian government and people once more, expressing confidence that the GERD would serve as a lasting source of power, unity, and prosperity for the entire region.
