President Taye Hails GERD as Reward of Ethiopian Resilience and Vision

Addis Ababa, September 9, 2025 (FMC) – Following the historic inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), President Taye Atske-Selassie praised the project as a testament to the resilience and vision of the Ethiopian people.

In a message released today, President Taye described the GERD as the outcome of “our sweat, blood, tears, and honor,” expressing deep gratitude for the foresight and courage of Ethiopia’s leaders, past and present. He underscored that the dam represents a reward for the nation’s perseverance and determination.

“The GERD will bring together the children of the Abay River,” the President noted, calling the project “the first of many great things to come.” He concluded his message with a symbolic invocation: “Let there be Eternal Light!”

The GERD, Africa’s largest hydropower project, has long been viewed as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s development ambitions, aiming to provide sustainable energy, enhance national unity, and strengthen regional cooperation. President Taye’s remarks highlight the dam’s significance not only as an engineering milestone but also as a source of national pride and hope for future generations.
