Addis Ababa, September 9, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s President Taye Atske-Selassie has highlighted the significance of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in messages shared on his social media page, recalling both the 2020 vision and today’s inauguration.
In a post from July 7, 2020, when he was Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, he wrote: “We owe GERD to the wisdom of our leaders, the skill of our engineers and technicians, the insight of our diplomats and negotiators, our commitment to Pan-Africanism and the principles of African solutions to African problems, and above all to the prayers of our mothers.”
Today, as Ethiopia officially inaugurated the GERD, President Taye shared another message, emphasizing the dam’s importance for the nation and the continent. He described the project as “a historic achievement that reflects Ethiopia’s resilience, dedication, and vision for sustainable development and regional cooperation.”
The GERD, a decades-long initiative, is expected to generate up to 5,000 megawatts of electricity, benefiting both Ethiopia and neighboring countries, while standing as a testament to the country’s investment in renewable energy and continental collaboration.
