President Taye Presides Over Launching of Fundraising Campaign for Mekedonia Humanitarian Association

Addis Ababa, March 15, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie today launched a fundraising campaign in support of the Mekedonia Humanitarian Association, an institution that provides care and shelter for elderly citizens and individuals living with mental disabilities.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the President expressed sorrow over the recent landslides and floods that affected communities in Gamo Zone, extending his condolences and wishes of comfort to the families impacted by the disaster.

President Taye noted that the tradition of mutual support and compassion is deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture, adding that Mekedonia has emerged as a pioneering humanitarian institution that has organized and institutionalized these cherished values through structured assistance and care.

He also emphasized that the government, which bears a broad responsibility in addressing social needs, is undertaking a range of initiatives in this regard, noting that many of these efforts are carried out in collaboration with charitable organizations.

The President further affirmed that the government will continue working to address the health and other basic needs of citizens through the development and implementation of social policies.

Calling on Ethiopians to extend their support, he urged the public to contribute to the Mekedonia Humanitarian Association, which currently provides care for more than 9,000 elderly and mentally disabled individuals.

President Taye, who toured the center prior to the launch of the campaign, said the humanitarian services being provided by the institution exceeded his expectations.

At the start of the program, the President’s son also contributed 1,000 U.S. dollars in support of the fundraising initiative.

The center, widely recognized for rescuing vulnerable individuals from street life, officially announced the launch of the major fundraising campaign beginning March 15, 2026.

To date, the institution has assisted more than 9,000 people in leaving street life and has expanded its services by establishing branches in 56 cities across the country.
