Addis Ababa, May 5, 2025 (FMC) — President Taye Atske Selassie has said that Ethiopia’s victory over colonial forces stands as lasting proof that freedom and peace are not granted by foreign powers, but won through national determination and sacrifice.
Speaking at the 84th Patriots’ Victory Day commemoration at the Victory Monument in Arat Kilo this morning, the President laid a wreath in honor of those who gave their lives for Ethiopia’s independence.
“Patriots’ Victory Day is a moment when we remember that colonialism can be defeated on African soil,” he said. “It is a day that honors those who fought and triumphed, and reveals the defeat of those who betrayed the country.”
President Taye emphasized that Ethiopia’s resistance was not only a military triumph but also a moral one.
He said the patriots’ struggle was marked by both courage and compassion, noting that Ethiopian fighters honored even those who surrendered—an enduring national value.
He also stressed that the legacy of the patriots must inspire the present and future. “Today, Ethiopia’s progress cannot be stopped. True heroism lies in building peace,” he added, urging political actors to reject reckless agendas in favor of unity and stability.
The President concluded by calling on all citizens to emulate the bravery and selflessness of the patriots in contributing to Ethiopia’s development.
