Presidents of Russia and Iran aim to expand cooperation in gas and electricity sectors

Addis Ababa, December 12, 2025 (FMC) — Presidents of Russia and Iran, Vladimir Putin and Masoud Pezeshkian, held talks in Ashgabat, as reported by T BRICS, citing the website of the Kremlin.

During the meeting, they discussed opportunities for joint work in the gas and electricity sectors. These areas complement the existing cooperation in nuclear energy, including the construction of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

“Last year, trade turnover increased by 13 per cent, and in the first three quarters of this year – by another eight per cent. […] We continue to work on our key large-scale projects. This concerns the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the development of infrastructure, including the North–South corridor. We are discussing opportunities for cooperation in gas and electricity. Significant work also continues in agriculture,” President Putin noted.

Masoud Pezeshkian thanked the Russian leader for his support and assured readiness to implement the terms of the countries’ strategic agreement.

“Regarding the comprehensive strategic document, we are determined to put everything we agreed upon into action. Concerning the Astara–Resht railway route, I want to say that we have already acquired 100 kilometres,” he said.

Putin also emphasised that Russian–Iranian cooperation has reached a qualitatively new level following the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement in January 2025.
