Addis Ababa, June 1, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia, an ancient nation with a well-established system and governance tradition, cannot be misled by petty propaganda, said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), the country’s incumbent Prime Minister and President of the Prosperity Party.
The Prime Minister made the remarks after casting his vote in Ethiopia’s 7th General Election in his hometown of Beshasha earlier this morning, joining tens of millions of fellow Ethiopians participating in the nationwide electoral process.
He noted that citizens have demonstrated strong courage since the early hours of voting, describing their turnout as a reflection of a deep commitment to building a democratic system and strengthening the state.
According to the Prime Minister, the ongoing process reflects the Ethiopian people’s determination to make their own decisions, stressing that they do not require “consultants or scolds” to determine their political direction.
He further emphasized that attention should be given to how prepared citizens are to shape history with integrity and commitment, without betraying the trust placed in them by the people and without fatigue or hesitation.
He said political competition should not be defined by winning or losing, but by improving service delivery and the lives of citizens who have entrusted leaders with responsibility.
The Prime Minister stated that the coming five years will require greater effort, dedication, integration, and innovative thinking than previous years.
He reiterated that Ethiopia is an ancient nation with established systems of governance, adding that it cannot be deceived by minor propaganda. Respecting the country’s historical significance and working to improve citizens’ lives, he said, would ensure success for all political actors.
Prime Minister Abiy also stated that he is prepared to accept the outcome of any decision made by the public.
He called on winning parties to serve the people faithfully and urged those who do not succeed to accept the results with dignity and grace.
