Addis Ababa, December 16, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon his arrival in Addis Ababa, marking Modi’s first-ever visit to Ethiopia.
The Indian prime minister arrived in the Ethiopian capital this afternoon as part of a three-nation tour covering Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman.
“It is my great pleasure to receive Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India for his official visit, PM Abiy said in a social media post after personally welcoming his Indian counterpart at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.
Prime Minister Abiy added, “His [Narendra Modi’s] presence underscores the growing ties between our two countries, and I look forward to meaningful engagements that will further deepen our cooperation across shared priorities.”
According to information released ahead of the visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, focusing on strengthening cooperation in areas including trade, investment, development partnership and capacity building.
It has been learned that Modi is also scheduled to address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament and hold engagements with members of the Indian community in Ethiopia during his stay.
Ethiopia hosts the headquarters of the African Union and other multilateral organizations, making Addis Ababa a key diplomatic centre for continental and international engagement.
The Ethiopia visit follows Modi’s earlier stop in Jordan and precedes the final leg of his tour to Oman, where India and Oman are marking 70 years of diplomatic relations, according to official itinerary information.
