Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is positioning the country’s environmental efforts as part of global solutions to climate challenges, highlighting the role of collective action in building a sustainable future.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while joining Ethiopians from all walks of life participating in the nationwide one-day Green Legacy tree-planting campaign.
Planting seedlings at the Artificial Intelligence University, Prime Minister Abiy said trees represent hope and that the seedlings being planted today are investments in tomorrow and the future of children.
He said Ethiopia’s continued tree-planting efforts over the past seven years through the Green Legacy Initiative have laid a strong foundation for the country’s prosperity, development and sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Abiy noted that Ethiopia’s achievements through the Green Legacy Initiative have gained international recognition, with several countries showing interest in learning from the country’s experience.
He said Ethiopia’s environmental efforts have contributed to the country being selected to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32), describing the decision as recognition of the country’s environmental protection activities at the global level.
The Prime Minister explained that COP32 will provide Ethiopia with an opportunity to showcase its green development experience and share its practical lessons with the international community.
He said the conference, which is expected to bring together tens of thousands of participants and more than 100 world leaders, will create a major platform for advancing global discussions on environmental protection and climate action.
Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the ongoing tree-planting efforts represent an investment for future generations, noting that Ethiopia is planting hope, tomorrow, and a better future through the Green Legacy Initiative.
He also stressed that achieving such a national vision requires cooperation and collective efforts.
The Prime Minister further highlighted that trees serve as sources of food, shade, beauty and protection against land degradation and soil erosion, urging Ethiopians to sustain their shared commitment toward realizing the country’s green development ambitions.
